Is the commuter boat a cheaper river cruise, and does contactless work on it? You can pay with contactless or Oyster on the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers river bus, touching in and out on the yellow readers at each pier. River fares do not count towards the daily cap, but a Travelcard gets a third off.
It is a fast, practical way between Westminster, the London Eye, Bankside, the Tower and Greenwich, with good views from the open deck. What it lacks is commentary or table service.

Which adapter do you need, and do you need a voltage converter? UK sockets are Type G, with three rectangular pins, and the supply is 230 volts. Most phone, tablet and laptop chargers are rated 100 to 240 volts, so they need only a plug adapter, not a converter. Check the small print on each charger.

Which days does it happen, where should you stand and when should you arrive? At Buckingham Palace, the King's Guard changes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with the ceremony running from about 10:45 for around 45 minutes. Londoners do carry umbrellas, but showers are often light and brief, so a good hooded raincoat or trench is just as practical. If you are caught out, ask the doorman; many hotels can lend one.

Which areas are LGBTQ+ friendly, which bars are worth knowing, and will hotels be welcoming? London is one of the most open cities in the world, and same-sex couples are entirely normal at luxury hotels. Under the Equality Act 2010, it is unlawful for a hotel to treat you less favourably because of your sexual orientation or gender reassignment.
Pride in London takes place in summer, when hotels near the parade route book up early. For a quieter evening, the hotel bars of Mayfair and Covent Garden are relaxed and welcoming. Note any room preferences when you book; good hotels handle them discreetly.
